What Is Leucoderma?

Leucoderma, a skin disease is also referred to as Vitiligo. The disease is characterized by white coloured patches on the superficial parts of the body as the skin, eyes, the genital region and the scalp. These patches appear as the skin loses its pigment melanin which is responsible for the whitening of the epidermis. These white colored regions which develop on the skin over a period of time are referred to as leucoderma or achroderma. The skin pigment melanin may undergo a partial loss or sometimes complete discoloration of the skin occurs. The causes of the disease are varied. It may occur due to genetic factors, or post-inflammation, or sometimes due to weak body immunity or may result from skin infections, exposure to drugs or environmental factors. It is a chronic disease and sometimes cannot be cured. Patients respond differently to the medicines available depending on the root cause of the disease.

What Are The Symptoms Of
Leucoderma?

  • The patient complains of appearance of white patches on the skin which may be caused due to exposure to sunlight
  • .The white colored pigment also appears on different body parts due to an existing injury. These white patches may sometimes be harmless, but cause itching when exposed to the sun or higher temperatures or due to sweating.
  • When the skin de-pigmentation becomes easily recognizable on the facial region, parts of the hand or other regions, you should immediately seek medical help.
  • The symptoms may include graying of hair at an early age and changes in the color of the retina.
  •  The complete process does not cause any kind of pain, but these patches start expanding and gradually their size increases which can further cause stress and anxiety.
  • The tissues of the mouth also lose their color as the mucous membranes start showcasing discoloration.

Causes Of Leucoderma

  • It is often caused due to a pre-existing autoimmune disease in our body. In this condition, the immune system acts against our body, and automatically destroys the healthy body cells. The melanocyte count thus starts degrading at a rapid phase and thus skin discoloration is seen leading to leucoderma.
  • Hereditary factors also contribute to the disease. Stress can initiate the genes responsible for skin de-pigmentation also.
  • Sometimes viral as well as bacterial infections can also lead to leucoderma. Syphilis, or a leprosy condition or a lichen infection may also lead to Leucoderma.
  • When our body is continuously exposed to chemicals or the sun, due to our occupation lifestyle, it may also cause leucoderma.
  • Neurological factors also lead to this kind of a skin condition. The nerve endings may produce some chemicals which harm the melanocytes and cause appearance of milky-white skin patches.

What Are The Different Treatments Of
Leucoderma?

A permanent cure for leucoderma has not been found yet. The main aim of the doctors is to cure the affected patches with over the counter medication and finding the initiating factors of the disease. The following methods of treatment are followed:

Medicinal cure: The doctors often suggest topical creams and ointments which can help in regaining the lost pigments of the skin and reduce the inflammation. Also medicines are prescribed which can work on the body’s defense mechanism and improve the existing immunity of our body.

Light Treatment: Patients have to undergo repeated radiation sessions in which the affected regions are treated using a narrow ultra violet band light. This helps in regaining the skin color.

Using Cosmetics and Surgery: It is better to use skin tanning creams on the diseased portions of the body, if you have a few leucoderma patches. People also apply make-up to hide the affected area. Doctors may ask the patients to get a skin surgery done and get the patches removed using grafting methods.
